Test your own Citation Share right now

Open Perplexity, type your most important category question, and check whether your brand is mentioned. If not, that's not a visibility problem in the traditional sense — it's a Citation Authority problem, and it calls for a different fix than better SEO.

Information Gain, not volume, decides who gets cited

Run the same category question through Perplexity for ten of the most important buyer questions in a market, and a pattern shows up consistently: one brand can appear in eight of ten answers while a competitor with a higher Domain Authority appears in one. The difference usually isn't content quality, backlinks, or domain authority — it's Information Gain: something the AI can't already generate from its own training data, like a proprietary benchmark, a named framework, or specific implementation data. Comprehensive content that says nothing an AI doesn't already know adds nothing to that model, however well it's written.

That's also why Domain Authority is losing relevance for AI citation specifically. DA was built to estimate Google's PageRank — a proxy for how many sites link to yours. AI engines ask a different question: does this source provide information I cannot generate myself? A site with modest DA and one genuinely proprietary data point gets cited over a high-DA site with hundreds of derivative articles.

Triangulated Authority: why cross-platform presence compounds

The brands AI engines trust most in any category rarely have the most content or the biggest social following. They have Triangulated Authority — the same brand knowledge appearing across multiple independent platforms (website, LinkedIn, Reddit, industry forums, third-party publications), consistently, over time. AI engines build confidence in a source the way people do: the more independent places they encounter the same claim, the more they trust it. One great article on a website is one data point. That same insight appearing on the website, on LinkedIn, in a Reddit thread, and in a newsletter is four independent validations — which is why Signal Density, not content volume, is the lever that actually builds Citation Authority. (More on how that distribution actually works in The Distribution Waterfall.)

The five metrics that replace old SEO KPIs

Traditional SEO reporting doesn't measure any of this. The GEO Command Center framework maps each old metric to the one that actually reflects AI-era visibility:

  • Keyword ranking → Citation Share — % of AI answers that name your brand
  • Domain Authority → Entity Closeness Score — how tightly AI associates you with your target concepts
  • Monthly organic traffic → Cost Per Citation — investment required to earn each AI citation
  • Content publish frequency → Unique Node Velocity — Knowledge Nodes with genuine Information Gain published per month
  • Share of voice → Competitor Citation Gap — your Citation Share vs. your primary competitor's
This week in five ideas: Citation Share replaces ranking position as the metric that matters. Information Gain — not volume — drives citation preference. Triangulated Authority requires cross-platform presence, not just a strong website. Domain Authority predicts Google ranking but not AI citation. Five new metrics replace the old SEO KPIs in the GEO era.

Tools for this layer

GEO Auditor establishes a Citation Share baseline for any URL. AI Tracer builds a Competitor Citation Map and Entity Closeness score. GEO Fact Check audits whether AI engines are describing a brand accurately once it is cited. All three are part of the AI Visibility Suite.
